The walnut fruit fly (Rhagoletis completa) is a neozone species and, as a winner of climate change, a serious pest, primarily of walnuts, but also of black walnuts. 

Main symptoms:

Due to the feeding activity of the larvae, not only the nut shell but also the nut kernel itself can turn black and become unsightly. The tree and leaves are not damaged. Susceptibility to pests varies. Early-ripening varieties are more attractive to walnut fruit fly attack, while late-ripening varieties are generally considered less susceptible.

Biology: like the cherry fruit fly, the walnut fruit fly produces only one generation per year, and the pupae overwinter in the soil (diapause).
Egg laying: At the end of July, 12-15 eggs are laid under the skin of the fruit.
Incubation time: 5 days.
Main summer period: from early July to late September.
Optimal conditions: warm, long summer.  

Use:

To prevent the pest from flying directly to the protected plants, the traps should be hung, for example, on another nearby tree. If this is not possible, the traps can be attached to a stake. Hang the traps at eye level between the prevailing wind direction and the tree.The traps should not be covered by branches or leaves. Each trap should be checked every 2–3 days. If the trap is heavy, re-glue the surfaces or replace the trap. The pheromone remains active for about 6-8 weeks, after which it must be replaced.

Traps must be hung before the moths start flying.

Use of the “Completavit” attractant sachet: to activate the attractant sachet, you must remove the foil covering the visible holes of the attractant sachet. The remaining sachet must not be damaged and is hung in the attractant trap using the round opening at the top.
